Storagecraft keeps saying it's impossible. Numerios products do this in some or other way. Have VSS running on hypervisor (not inside a VM) for instant snapshots (SANs with hardware VSS don't have any performance penalty) and deal with hypervisor changed block tracking (CBT) engine for incremental backups and replication. Key point: you just need to do everything properly. No temp injecting, no IRP table hooking (look, it's NT kernel words, what do they do on a generally accessible site page? How many people can tell what they mean? 100? 2000? Not more.), no performance degradation.

Not good.ģ) Other companies (including the one I work for / own ) do have a VM backup software they don't install ANY agent into a VM it backups. With backup agents of course.Ģ) Storagecraft does not have a technology to deal with hypervisors directly so instead of having TWO codebases to cover both use cases they stick with a single one and use marketing to fix broken / poor / missing development. Here are some facts however:ġ) Storagecraft had spent many many man-years developing backups for PHYSICAL machines. Without some sort of agent to run the show, it isn’t possible to do fast incrementals without severely impacting system performance.īunch of clueless and pointless words. An “agentless” solution does so by either leveraging third-party agents, or temporarily injecting an agent, to do the work. Whether a system claims to be agentless or not, the work of communicating with the source operating system and organizing system backup has to be done somewhere. The Myth of Agentless Backup and Recovery - Why StorageCraft Uses Agents Reply: Here is an interesting article written by Storagecraft (ok they would say this as they don't do agentless but it is food for thought!) I considered using agentless but for my requirements not at all required,

Its certainly worth trying out using the 31 Trial edition and decide for yourself.ĭazGRIT wrote: If Storagecraft keeps a backup copy as a snapshot on the same disk where actual data resides - it's not a backup.Īnswer: Their backups are not a snapshot (like VM snapshots), it is a block based backup of the OS. In turn one would back up to an External source of choice.ĭazGRIT wrote: Don't do it this way. All are identical and do exactly the same thing which is good thing as easy to use. I use the following versions SBS - Server - Virtual & Workstation Editions. Overall though and with all the Test Restores etc I have done. A real pain if you decide to move Image Manager., The other issue I have with this app is that one can't easily export the settings to a new PC. Getting an understanding of the concept is initially confusing but in time makes sense. Image Manager: Is an additional App that is required to manage certain type of backups (continuous). In turn I ensure I have the OS Partition as small as possible on original PC/Server.

This is also a great thing as it captures the lot and incremental's run very quick (3mins for most of mine)Ī full image restores will require a HDD equal to or larger than original. This is "Block Based" so backs up the partition HDD blocks. Just a matter of adding them into current window. Management: One can manage/control ALL PC's and Servers jobs for basically any PC/Server that has Shadowprotect installed which is nifty.

Renewals: Optional, but is so cheap worthwhile Acronis (who I like have fallen badly in that area) Support (mail & Phone): Is excellent which is important. The Virtual edition is cheaper than SBS edition and can be used on any Virtual supported OS. The workstartion for sole users is a bit pricy but if you have SBS edition or Server edition you can buy add on packs for the PCs are excellent prices. Pricing: It's very well priced for SBS Edition ($495.00 RRP in Australia) and one doesn't need to worry about buying add-on packs for SQL, Oracle, Exchange etc like some vendors (whom I won't mention) like to charge absurd amounts for. Its tiny 42MB install.įrom memory, the Acronis Server with managment edition is.

The other thing I like is that it is the same install file regardless if for a PC or Server. I have found it to be much less invasive and also a lot faster than Acronis (Server, PC or Virtual versions) and actually works as advertised. The features it offers (you can read them on their site) are excellent. I have to say Shadowprotect is excellent and somewhat easier to use over Acronis. I have used Acronis for years now and only started using Storagecraft Shadowprotect recently.

Thought I would chime in for late arrivers.
